Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Sanctuary (Belize)

Weather…

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is globally unique as the first protected area specifically created for the conservation of the jaguar. Tucked away in the eastern foothills of the Maya Mountains, it covers a vast area of pristine tropical rainforest. Although jaguars are very shy and rarely seen directly, their tracks on the numerous hiking trails testify to their presence. The reserve is a hiker's paradise, with paths leading to spectacular waterfalls and viewpoints like 'Tiger Fern'. The diversity of birds, reptiles, and other mammals such as tapirs and pumas makes Cockscomb one of the most important ecological hotspots in Central America. It is managed by the Belize Audubon Society and is a model of sustainable ecotourism.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time is the dry season from February to May, when trails are passable and jaguars frequent waterholes. During the rainy season they remain active, but the paths become muddy and visibility reduces.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and dusk are the peak activity times when jaguars hunt. At midday they typically rest in dense undergrowth and are very hard to spot.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked trails and never approach a jaguar, even if it appears calm. Feeding wildlife is not allowed as it habituates animals to humans and creates danger.
🎒
What to bring
A high-quality binocular is essential for observing jaguars from a safe distance. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is advised as the trails are often muddy.
🧭
Getting there
The sanctuary is in the Cockscomb Basin, about 30 km southwest of Dangriga. Access is via a gravel road that is passable with a regular car.
🦌
What to expect
Jaguars are solitary with large home ranges; sightings are never guaranteed. Plan for multiple days and take guided early-morning drives for the best chance.
