San Estevan is a historic village located in the Orange Walk District of northern Belize, situated along the eastern banks of the New River. The community is widely recognized for the San Estevan Maya ruins, which date back to the Middle Preclassic period and once served as a significant political and ceremonial center. During the 19th century, the village saw a population surge as it became a sanctuary for Mestizo refugees fleeing the Caste War in neighboring Yucatan, Mexico. Today, the local economy remains deeply rooted in agriculture, with the large-scale cultivation of sugar cane serving as the primary livelihood for most residents. The village's location on the river was historically vital for the transport of timber and agricultural products toward the Caribbean coast. San Estevan retains a traditional rural character, where the ancient archaeological mounds stand as silent witnesses to the area's long and complex human history.
