San Jose is a prominent village in the Orange Walk District of northern Belize, conveniently located along the Philip Goldson Highway. Established in the mid-1800s, it has grown into one of the most populous rural communities in the northern region. The residents are primarily of Maya and Mestizo descent, tracing their lineage back to refugees of the 19th-century Caste War of Yucatán. The village's economy is almost entirely centered on the sugarcane industry, with the annual harvest season, known as 'Zafra', being the most active time of year for the community. The surrounding terrain is flat and highly fertile, dominated by extensive sugarcane fields that support the livelihoods of most families. San Jose features a well-developed community infrastructure, including several schools and churches that serve as central social gathering points. Despite its position on a major national highway, the village retains a strong sense of traditional identity, with Spanish being the primary language spoken among its inhabitants.
