Caledonia is a historic village in the Corozal District, picturesquely situated on the banks of the New River. Founded around 1917, the settlement played a pivotal role in the river trade of British Honduras during the 1920s. At that time, Caledonia served as a key stop for boats transporting tobacco, alligator skins, and livestock between Belize City and Orange Walk Town. With the construction of the Philip Goldson Highway in the 1930s, river traffic declined in importance, but the village remained a vital agricultural center. Geographically, Caledonia lies in a plain handy for large-scale sugar cane cultivation, which is now the primary source of income for residents. The population is predominantly Maya-Mestizo and maintains a rich cultural heritage often linked to the nearby Noh Mul archaeological site. With an estimated population of 1,373 in 2022, Caledonia is one of the larger rural communities in the north. The village is known for its strong community spirit and traditional festivities.
