Pink Sands Beach
Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary coastal stretches in the world, extending approximately five kilometers along the island's eastern shore. The characteristic pale pink hue of the sand is created by the mixing of fine white sand with the crushed red shells of microscopic single-celled organisms known as foraminifera, which inhabit the nearby coral reefs. After these organisms perish, their calcium carbonate shells are washed ashore by currents and pulverized over time, resulting in the unique pigmentation that defines the beach. Geographically, Harbour Island is home to one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas, Dunmore Town, which briefly served as the capital of the archipelago during the 18th century. The offshore reef acts as a natural breakwater, ensuring that the Atlantic waters remain calm and crystal clear, making it a safe haven for swimming and snorkeling. The blend of this rare geological phenomenon, the tropical climate, and the surrounding Victorian-era architecture contributes to the beach's status as a premier cultural and tourist landmark of the Bahamas.
