Alice Town is the principal settlement on North Bimini and functions as the tourism and commercial center of the Bimini island group. The town gained international fame largely due to the American author Ernest Hemingway, who resided here during the 1930s; the region's abundant marine life provided inspiration for his Nobel Prize-winning work, "The Old Man and the Sea." Situated on a narrow strip of land, the town is bisected by the King’s Highway and Queen’s Highway. Alice Town is widely regarded as the "Big Game Fishing Capital of the World" because the proximity of the Gulf Stream brings vast populations of tuna, marlin, and swordfish close to the shore. In addition to fishing, the town is linked to the mystery of the "Bimini Road," a submerged rock formation some believe is a remnant of Atlantis. The local landscape features historic inns, brightly painted wooden structures, and modern resort developments. The harbor is a vital port for ferries arriving from Florida and international private vessels.
