Fort Charlotte (Bahamas)

Weather…

Fort Charlotte is the largest fortification in Nassau, commissioned in 1788 by Lord Dunmore, the British Governor of the Bahamas. Named after Queen Sahra Charlotte, wife of King George III, the fort stands on a hill overlooking the harbor to provide a strategic defense against potential invaders. The massive complex actually consists of three distinct parts: Fort Charlotte in the center, Fort Stanley to the west, and Fort D'Arcy to the east. Constructed from solid limestone, the fort features a dry moat, drawbridges, ramparts, and an extensive network of underground tunnels and dungeons. Despite being armed with 42 cannons, the fort never saw military action or fired a shot in battle. Currently, it functions as a historic site where visitors can explore the barracks and stone fortifications that represent 18th-century British military engineering.
