Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve (Bahamas)

Weather…

The Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve, located on Eleuthera, is the island's first national park and a premier research facility for Bahamian flora. Opened in 2011, the preserve encompasses 25 acres (10 hectares) of land dedicated to the conservation of indigenous plant species and the promotion of biodiversity. The site was established by Shelby White in honor of her late husband, Leon Levy, and is managed in partnership with the Bahamas National Trust. Visitors can traverse over two miles of trails that showcase various Bahamian ecosystems, including mangrove wetlands, coppice forests, and dune habitats. A primary objective of the preserve is the study of traditional Bahamian ethnobotany, specifically the preservation of knowledge regarding medicinal plants used in "bush medicine." The facility includes an education center, a herbarium, and a specialized lath house for the propagation of rare orchids. Situated near Governor's Harbour, the preserve also functions as a critical sanctuary for native bird populations and pollinators.
