Stairway to Heaven (Bahamas)

Weather…

The Queen's Staircase, frequently called the Stairway to Heaven, is a major historical landmark located in Nassau, New Providence. It consists of 66 steps that were hand-carved out of solid limestone by enslaved people between 1793 and 1794. The staircase was originally designed to provide a direct and secure access route from Fort Fincastle to the city in the event of an invasion. It was later named in honor of Queen Victoria, who reigned for 64 years and oversaw the abolition of slavery in the Bahamas. The staircase is set within a deep, narrow gorge where the walls are covered in lush tropical plants and moss, creating a cool microclimate. Today, it stands as one of the most visited sites in the Bahamas, representing both colonial history and the immense physical labor of the 18th century.
