Hope Town (Bahamas)

Weather…

Hope Town is a pretty village situated on Elbow Cay within the Abaco Islands, renowned for its iconic candy-striped lighthouse. The settlement was established in 1785 by Wyannie Malone, a Loyalist widow from South Carolina, and other settlers who remained loyal to the British Crown after the American Revolution. The community's most defining landmark is the Hope Town Lighthouse, completed in 1863, which remains one of the last operational kerosene-fueled and hand-wound lighthouses in the world. The village architecture features narrow, winding lanes and lively wooden cottages inspired by New England colonial styles, reflecting the heritage of its founders. Historically, the economy revolved around shipbuilding and the hazardous industry of "wrecking" (salvaging shipwrecks), but it has transitioned into a premier destination for sailing and boutique tourism. Hope Town maintains strict preservation laws, including a ban on motor vehicles in the historic district to protect its serene environment. Following the devastation of Hurricane Dorian in 2019, the town underwent a significant grassroots reconstruction effort to restore its historic structures.
