Marsh Harbour serves as the commercial and administrative hub of the Abaco Islands and is the third-largest city in the Bahamas. The settlement was established in 1784 by American Loyalists who fled the United States following the American Revolutionary War. Situated on a peninsula along the Sea of Abaco, the town features one of the country's busiest marinas and deep-water ports. In September 2019, Marsh Harbour sustained catastrophic damage from Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm, which triggered an extensive international reconstruction effort. Today, the town remains the primary logistical center for the surrounding cays and is home to the Leonard M. Thompson International Airport. The local economy is driven by yachting tourism, retail commerce, and government services for the northern region of the archipelago.
