St. Joseph Ruins

The ruins of St. Joseph mark the site of the first capital of Trinidad, originally known as San José de Oruña. Founded in 1592 by Antonio de Berrío, the town served as the administrative center of the Spanish colony for over two centuries. The history of the site is defined by conflict; in 1595, it was famously attacked and burned by Sir Walter Raleigh during his quest for El Dorado. Later, in 1837, St. Joseph was the scene of a significant mutiny by African soldiers of the West India Regiment, led by Daaga. Today, only a few remnants and historical markers testify to its former prominence as the seat of government. Located at the foothills of the Northern Range, the area gives a deep look into the Spanish colonial era and the subsequent transition to British rule. The ruins stand as a quiet monument to the early settlers' resilience and Trinidad's layered colonial heritage.
