The Parang Centre in the village of Lopinot is the heart of Spanish-Caribbean musical culture in Trinidad. Parang is a traditional folk music originally brought to the island in the 19th century by the so-called 'Cocoa Panyols', Venezuelan migrant workers of Spanish descent. The lyrics are mostly in Spanish and often deal with religious themes, particularly the story of Christmas. Traditional instruments such as the cuatro (a small guitar), maracas, and mandolin are preserved and exhibited at the center. Lopinot itself, named after the French settler Compte de Lopinot, provides the convenient setting for this cultural heritage, as the cocoa plantations were the original home of this music. The center functions not only as a museum but also as a training ground for young musicians to ensure the survival of this unique tradition. Annual competitions and festivals attract visitors from across the country, making the site a bustling symbol of Trinidadian identity.
