Princes Town is a historic town located in southern Trinidad, acting as the administrative capital of the Princes Town Regional Corporation. The settlement was originally known as 'Mission,' named after the Amerindian mission established by Spanish Capuchin friars in the 18th century. The town was renamed in 1880 to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria's grandsons, Prince Albert Victor and Prince George, who famously planted two Poui trees in front of the local Anglican church during their stay. Geographically, Princes Town is situated in a hilly inland area that was traditionally a major center for sugar cane production. The town is internationally recognized for the 'Devil's Woodyard,' a nearby mud volcano site known for its periodic geological activity. Economically, Princes Town serves as a vital commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural communities. Its population is a diverse blend of Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian residents, reflecting the deep heritage of the region's plantation past. Despite modern growth, the town has preserved its community-oriented atmosphere and strong connection to its agricultural roots.
