Brukenthal National Museum (Romania)

Weather…

The Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu is Romania's oldest museum and one of the most significant art institutions in Southeast Europe. Established in the late 18th century by Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, the Governor of Transylvania, it reflects the Enlightenment era's passion for art and knowledge. The magnificent Baroque palace that houses the museum was constructed between 1777 and 1787. Officially opened to the public in 1817, it predates many famous European museums. The collection is based on the Baron's private art gallery, which currently features over 1,200 masterpieces of European painting from the 15th to the 18th centuries, including works by Jan van Eyck, Titian, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Beyond its art gallery, the museum complex encompasses a library of 300,000 volumes, as well as departments for history, natural history, and archaeology. The palace itself remains a prime example of secular Baroque architecture in the heart of Sibiu.
