The ASTRA Museum in Sibiu, officially known as the Museum of Traditional Popular Civilization, is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. Spanning an impressive area of 96 hectares within the Dumbrava Sibiului Natural Park, it hosts over 400 buildings, including houses, workshops, and technical monuments. The museum was originally founded in 1905 by the ASTRA Association to preserve Romanian cultural identity under Austro-Hungarian rule. However, the current open-air site was opened to the public in 1963. Visitors can explore authentic windmills, watermills, presses, and traditional farmsteads brought from all regions of Romania. The park features a lake and over 10 kilometers of walking paths that provide a deep insight into rural life from past centuries. It remains an animated cultural hub, regularly hosting craft fairs and traditional festivals throughout the year.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.
