Fortress of the Immaculate Conception (Nicaragua)

Weather…

The Fortress of the Immaculate Conception, also known as El Castillo, is situated on the banks of the San Juan River in southern Nicaragua. It was constructed between 1673 and 1675 to shield the city of Granada from raids by Caribbean pirates. The massive stone structure sits atop a hill, providing a wide view over the strategically vital waterway. A famous historical event occurred in 1762 when the young Rafaela Herrera successfully defended the fort against British invaders. Despite numerous sieges and the harsh jungle environment, the fortress remained a critical military outpost for centuries. Today, it is a protected historical monument and houses a museum documenting colonial military history. The surrounding village of El Castillo maintains its pretty charm and remains accessible only by boat.
