Corkscrew Ridge (Jamaica)

Weather…

Corkscrew Ridge is a prominent geomorphological feature located within the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, characterized by its exceptionally steep and winding terrain. The ridge owes its name to its spiral-like topography, a product of millions of years of tectonic uplift and intense hydraulic erosion by mountain streams. Geologically, the area is part of the Blue Mountain Inlier, consisting of a mix of metamorphic shales and igneous rocks that are among the oldest on the island. Due to its significant elevation and consistently high humidity, the ridge provides well-suited conditions for the cultivation of premium Blue Mountain Coffee. The surrounding environment is a lush habitat for endemic Jamaican flora, including various species of tree ferns and bromeliads. Historically, the ridge was a formidable barrier to transport, and the roads built across it are famous for their hairpin turns and dramatic gradients. It serves as an essential ecological corridor for endemic wildlife, such as the Jamaican Blackbird and the Streamertail Hummingbird.
