The Wag Water River is one of the most significant rivers in eastern Jamaica, originating high in the Blue Mountains. It flows for approximately 35 miles (56 kilometers) through the parishes of St. Andrew and St. Mary before emptying into the Caribbean Sea at Annotto Bay. The river is best known for flowing through Castleton Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1862. Along its course, the river creates scenic landscapes featuring deep gorges, lush tropical vegetation, and natural swimming pools that are popular with both locals and tourists. Historically, the Wag Water River was a major source for Kingston's water supply, with water being diverted via aqueducts to the capital city. Getting there
The river is accessible via the Junction Road (A3) which connects Kingston with Annotto Bay. Various entry points can be found along the road, often near bridges or small settlements throughout the St. Mary parish.
Best season
The best time to visit is during the dry season from December to April. During the hurricane season from June to November, heavy rains can cause the water level to rise rapidly, making the river muddy and swift.
Terrain & paths
The terrain along the riverbanks is often lushly vegetated and can be very slippery after rain. In the riverbed, there are smooth stones and gravel bars that require caution and surefootedness when crossing.
What to bring
Water shoes with non-slip soles are well-suited for activities in and around the river. A waterproof backpack for valuables, insect repellent, and swimwear should not be forgotten for any trip to this scenic river.
Parking
Parking options are limited to widened roadsides or small private lots where a minor fee might be charged. In Annotto Bay, more official parking spaces can be found near the river's mouth and the coastal area.
Safety
Watch out for strong currents, especially in deeper sections of the river. If dark clouds appear in the mountains, leave the water immediately as there is a serious risk of sudden flash floods occurring downstream.
Time needed
