Nanny Town Ruins (Jamaica)

Weather…

Nanny Town, hidden deep within the rugged Blue Mountains of Portland, stands as the most sacred site of resistance for the Windward Maroons. Named after Queen Nanny, Jamaica's only female National Hero, this mountain stronghold served as a primary base for guerilla warfare against British colonial forces during the First Maroon War in the 18th century. Situated at an elevation of approximately 600 meters, the town's nearly inaccessible location allowed Maroon warriors to repel superior British forces for years. The site features the remains of defensive stone walls and historical graves that testify to the fierce struggle for freedom. Although the town was eventually captured and destroyed by Captain Stoddart's troops in 1734, its legacy remains a powerful symbol of Black liberation. Today, the ruins are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, accessible only through a grueling multi-day trek that requires a Maroon guide.
