Getting there
The Swift River in Portland is best reached via the coastal road near Hope Bay. From there, smaller, partly unpaved roads lead upstream into the lush vegetation, and a local guide is often helpful for navigating the dense terrain.
Best season
The best time for a visit is during the dry season from December to April, when the water level is stable and the paths are passable. During the rainy season, the river can swell very quickly, making visits to the banks dangerous.

The terrain is typically tropical with dense forests, slippery river stones, and partly muddy paths along the bank. The river course itself is interspersed with large boulders in many places, which must be climbed over during hikes in the riverbed.
What to bring
