Johannesburg Mountain is a significant peak located in the western portion of the Blue Mountains range, near the border of St. Andrew and St. Thomas. Reaching an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters, it is part of the complex ridge system that defines the eastern highlands of Jamaica. The mountain's relief is steep and often obscured by heavy mist, supporting a rich montane forest ecosystem. This area is particularly important for its high concentration of endemic plants, including rare tree ferns and orchids. Historically, the mountain and its surrounding ridges were part of the difficult terrain that sheltered Maroon communities during the colonial period. The slopes are also used for small-scale coffee farming, where the elevation and volcanic soils produce a high-quality bean. Johannesburg Mountain has a wild and less-traveled alternative for hikers looking to experience the primary cloud forests of Jamaica away from the more commercialized trails near Kingston.
