Santa Lucía Church

The Santa Lucía Church is located in the easy on the eye colonial village of the same name near Tegucigalpa and is a gem of 16th-century religious architecture. Originally built in 1572, the church is famous for housing the "Christ of Mercy" (Cristo de las Mercedes), a black crucifix that was a gift from King Philip II of Spain to the mining community. The church's facade is a classic example of Spanish Baroque style, featuring simple lines and whitewashed walls typical of Honduran highland settlements. Inside, the well-preserved wooden altars, adorned with fine gold leaf, represent masterpieces of colonial craftsmanship and art. For centuries, the church has been a significant pilgrimage site, especially during the celebrations in honor of its patron saint every December. Due to its elevated position amidst pine forests, the church plaza gives an expansive view of the valley and surrounding natural landscape. The building is a protected historical monument and serves as a cornerstone of tourism in Santa Lucía, bridging deep religious traditions with the region's rich silver mining history.
