Ojojona is a small colonial town about 30 km southwest of Tegucigalpa in Francisco Morazán Department. It was founded in the 16th century as a mining settlement focused on silver and still preserves one of the best-conserved colonial townscapes in Honduras. Narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses with clay-tile roofs and several historic churches define its character. Today Ojojona is best known for its handicraft traditions, particularly black pottery and colorful paintings produced by many small workshops. Its cool elevation and quiet setting have turned it into a popular weekend and day-trip destination. Ojojona stands symbolically for the linkage of colonial heritage, craft culture and gentle mountain tourism in central Honduras.
