Former Central Penitentiary (Honduras)

Weather…

The former Central Penitentiary (Penitenciaría Central) in Tegucigalpa is a historic ruin that was once the most important penal institution in Honduras. It was inaugurated in 1883 under the government of Luis Bográn and stood as a symbol of the modernization of the justice system in the late 19th century. Built in a neoclassical style using massive stone, the facility featured extensive cell blocks and administrative wings. For over a century, it housed both common criminals and political prisoners, making it a place of significant socio-political weight. The prison's history ended abruptly in 1998 when Hurricane Mitch caused severe flooding that devastated the structure, leading to its evacuation and permanent closure. Today, only the massive outer walls and some ruins remain, serving as a monument to the forces of nature and the darker chapters of the city's history. The site is currently being considered for transformation into a cultural space or urban park.
