Basilica of Suyapa (Honduras)

Weather…

The Basilica of Our Lady of Suyapa in Tegucigalpa is the most important Catholic sanctuary in Honduras and a central site of Marian veneration in Central America. The monumental building was erected in honor of the Virgin of Suyapa, the country's patron saint, whose small statue was found in 1747 by a young peasant. Construction of the current Neo-Gothic style basilica began in 1954 and spanned several decades until its completion. The building impresses with its massive dimensions, magnificent stained-glass windows, and two high towers that dominate the city's skyline. In 2015, Pope Francis elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica, highlighting its cross-border religious significance. Every February, the basilica becomes the destination for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across Honduras and neighboring countries who gather to celebrate the feast of the Virgin of Suyapa. Beyond its religious function, the basilica serves as a symbol of national unity and the deep-seated faith of the Honduran people. Its architecture combines traditional sacred elements with modern construction methods, making it one of the largest and most modern houses of worship in the region.
