Valle de Ángeles is a former mining town about 30 km northeast of Tegucigalpa in Francisco Morazán Department, perched at roughly 1,400 m altitude in a belt of pine forest. It was founded in the 16th century to exploit local silver and gold deposits and was carefully restored during the 20th century as a designated handicraft village. Cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses and a central plaza dominated by the colonial parish church give the town a clear colonial atmosphere. Today its economy is driven by weekend tourism from the capital: workshops and galleries display wood carvings, leather goods, ceramics and textiles produced by local artisans. The cooler climate and the proximity of La Tigra National Park make Valle de Ángeles a favourite escape for families and day-trippers from Tegucigalpa.
