El Rosario Church (El Salvador)

Weather…

El Rosario Church in San Salvador is an outstanding example of modern sacred architecture in Latin America. Designed by Salvadoran architect Rubén Martínez and completed in 1971, the building radically departs from traditional church forms. It presents as a column-free, semi-circular concrete structure that allows an unobstructed view of the altar from any point. Its most striking feature is the stepped series of stained-glass windows, which transform natural light into a spectacular rainbow spectrum, creating a unique atmosphere that changes throughout the day. The church also houses the tomb of José Matías Delgado, a hero of Central American independence. Despite its simple, almost industrial exposed concrete facade, the interior reveals deep spiritual symbolism through light and form. The sculptural Stations of the Cross, crafted from iron, were also created by Martínez to complement the building's brutalist design.
