💡 Tips
- The city is a working port, so industrial traffic is heavy; always be cautious on the main access roads.
- Sunsets are beautiful from the coastal restaurants, but bring mosquito repellent for the evening.
- The local beaches have dark, volcanic sand which can get incredibly hot by midday-wear sandals.
- Seafood is exceptionally fresh, best eaten around lunchtime when fishermen bring in the daily catch.
🍽 Food
Widely available at unpretentious seafood shacks along the waterfront.
Served whole with lime and tortillas at beachfront comedores.
While seafood is king here, local pupuserias in the town center serve excellent traditional filled tortillas.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A busy local market to buy fresh produce and local Salvadoran snacks.
The best place to buy raw seafood directly from the boats if you have access to a kitchen.
A quieter, slightly more secluded beach area away from the main port activity.
While a short drive away, this protected reef area features much calmer waters and a relaxed vibe.

Acajutla is El Salvador's primary port city, located in the department of Sonsonate on the Pacific coast. The settlement's history dates back to pre-Columbian times, when it was a major center for the Pipil civilization before being conquered by Pedro de Alvarado in 1524. The modern port was extensively developed in the 1950s and now serves as the country's logistic backbone, handling the majority of exports such as coffee, sugar, and balsam. Beyond its industrial significance, Acajutla provides tourist attractions with vast beaches and a lively fishing culture. The city plays a central role in the national economy, featuring specialized terminals for containers, bulk cargo, and petroleum products. The climate is tropically hot, typical of the Pacific lowlands of Central America. The combination of historical heritage and modern infrastructure makes Acajutla one of the most dynamic locations in the Sonsonate region.
