San Fernando de Monte Cristi is a historic port city on the northwest coast of the Dominican Republic, near the border with Haiti. It was founded in 1506 by Nicolás de Ovando and experienced a golden age in the 19th century as a major export port for agricultural goods. The most prominent geographical feature is El Morro, an imposing limestone plateau that rises 242 meters above sea level and serves as the region's landmark. The city is famous for its traditional Victorian-style wooden houses and its extensive salt pans, where sea salt has been harvested for centuries. Today, Monte Cristi plays an important role in ecotourism, particularly through the Monte Cristi National Park, which protects mangroves and coral reefs. The local economy relies on fishing, salt production, and the cultivation of bananas in the irrigated valleys of the Río Yaque del Norte.
