Dajabón is the capital of the province of the same name in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, located directly on the border with Haiti. The city was officially founded in 1776 and today functions as one of the most important commercial hubs on the island of Hispaniola. Geographically, the urban area is bordered by the Masacre River, which forms the natural border between the two sovereign states. Twice a week, a significant bi-national market takes place here, which is of vital importance for the local economy and cross-border trade. The surrounding region is characterized by intensive cultivation of rice, tobacco, and bananas, as well as extensive cattle ranching in the plains near the Cordillera Central foothills. Historically, Dajabón was the site of numerous border conflicts and played a key role during the Dominican wars of independence against Haitian occupation.
