Sagua La Grande, located in the northwestern part of Villa Clara province, was officially founded on December 8, 1812. The city rapidly emerged as a significant industrial and commercial hub, largely due to the navigable Sagua la Grande River, which allowed for the efficient transport of sugar and other commodities to the nearby port of Isabela de Sagua. Its historic urban center was designated a National Monument of Cuba in 2011, celebrated for its impressive concentration of neoclassical and eclectic architecture. Sagua La Grande is the birthplace of world-renowned figures, including the surrealist painter Wifredo Lam and the influential musician Rodrigo Prats. The city is also famous in the medical world as the home of Dr. Joaquín Albarrán, a pioneer of modern urology. While its industrial prominence has evolved over the decades, the city remains a testament to the regional development of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The surrounding area, featuring the river's mouth and coastal cays, constitutes an important ecological environment.
