Castillo de Jagua (Cuba)

Weather…

The Castillo de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Xagua, commonly known as Castillo de Jagua, is a significant military fortress located at the entrance to Cienfuegos Bay. Completed in 1745 under the reign of King Philip V of Spain, the fortress was designed to protect the region from pirate raids and illegal trade that threatened the colonial economy. Architect Joseph Tantete Dubuiller designed the structure with a characteristic square plan, prominent corner towers, and a deep dry moat. The fort played a crucial role in defending Cuba's southern coast, even before the city of Cienfuegos was officially founded in 1819. Today, the building houses a museum documenting the history of local maritime navigation and colonial-era military fortifications. Visitors can explore the well-preserved barracks, the chapel, and the drawbridge, which is considered one of the few functional structures of its kind in the Caribbean.
