Cruces is a town rich in history located in the Cienfuegos Province, colloquially known as the 'Villa de los Molinos' (Town of the Mills). Its historical prominence stems largely from the Cuban struggle for independence in the 19th century. On December 15, 1895, the nearby Battle of Mal Tiempo took place, where Cuban insurgents led by Máximo Gómez and Antonio Maceo achieved a decisive victory over Spanish colonial forces. The local economy has traditionally been dominated by the sugar industry, with the 'Marta Abreu' mill serving as a central pillar of production. Geographically, Cruces is situated in a fertile plain in the northern part of the province and acts as a major railway junction, connecting the town with other key centers across the island. The urban layout is noted for its organized grid pattern and historical monuments reflecting its significant past. Cruces is also recognized for its spirited cultural life, particularly the annual commemorations of the victory at Mal Tiempo.
