San Juan de los Remedios, commonly known as Remedios, is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in Cuba, founded between 1513 and 1514. It is often regarded as the "eighth" of the original villas established by the Spanish conquistadors. The town is internationally famous for "Las Parrandas de Remedios," an animated folk festival held every December 24, which has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. At its heart lies the Plaza Mayor, the only town square in Cuba featuring two Catholic churches: the Iglesia Mayor of San Juan Bautista and the smaller Iglesia del Buen Viaje. The Iglesia Mayor is particularly noted for its magnificent 16th-century altar covered in gold leaf and a rare statue of a pregnant Virgin Mary. Remedios has meticulously preserved its colonial character, with architectural gems featuring large internal courtyards and terracotta tiled roofs. Historically driven by sugar production, its economy now thrives on tourism due to its role as a gateway to the northern cays. The town has a tranquil, historic atmosphere that transports visitors back to the Spanish colonial era.
