Yaguajay is a prominent municipality in the Sancti Spíritus province of central Cuba, spanning an area of approximately 1,032 square kilometers. Founded in 1847, the town secured its place in history during the final stages of the Cuban Revolution in December 1958. It was the site of the Battle of Yaguajay, where rebel forces led by Camilo Cienfuegos defeated the local garrison after ten days of intense fighting. This victory was instrumental in the collapse of the Batista regime and earned Cienfuegos the moniker "The Hero of Yaguajay." A large monument and museum complex now stand in his honor, serving as a major landmark. The regional economy is traditionally tied to sugar production and cattle ranching, though ecological conservation has gained prominence. To the north lies the Caguanes National Park, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve famous for its extensive cave systems, indigenous archaeological sites, and diverse coastal wetlands.
