Progresso Lagoon Village, often simply referred to as Progresso, is a scenic settlement located in the Corozal District of northern Belize. The village is situated on the eastern shore of the expansive Progresso Lagoon, one of the largest inland bodies of water in the country, which defines the community's identity. The area's history is ancient, with archaeological evidence pointing to a dense Maya population around the lagoon during the Classic period. Today, the village is home to about 1,200 residents whose daily lives are centered on agriculture and fishing. Sugarcane cultivation is the most vital economic sector, with local farmers supplying their harvests to nearby processing plants. Geographically, Progresso is located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Corozal Town in a flat, coastal plain. The lagoon provides more than just food; it is an increasingly popular spot for local tourism and recreational activities such as boating and birdwatching. The community is known for its hospitality and multicultural makeup, with both Spanish and English commonly spoken. In recent years, the appeal of its waterfront location has led to increased development of vacation homes and real estate in the surrounding area.
