Little Tobago Bird Sanctuary (Trinidad and Tobago)

Weather…

The Little Tobago Bird Sanctuary, also known as Bird of Paradise Island, is a roughly 180-hectare islet situated off the coast of Speyside. The island gained international fame in 1909 when Sir William Ingram introduced Greater Birds of Paradise from New Guinea to save them from extinction. While this colony vanished following a severe hurricane in 1963, the island remains a critical refuge for native seabirds such as the Red-billed Tropicbird and the Magnificent Frigatebird. Geographically, the island consists of steep cliffs and dry tropical forest, providing handy nesting conditions for colonies of boobies and terns. The surrounding waters host some of the region's most spectacular coral gardens, including massive brain corals. Access is strictly regulated, and the island is managed by state rangers to maintain the delicate balance between conservation and sustainable tourism. Its historical significance as a site for early species conservation makes Little Tobago a major scientific location for ornithologists worldwide.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The prime season for visiting Little Tobago Bird Sanctuary is the dry period, typically January to May, when seabirds nest actively. Red-billed tropicbirds, brown boobies, and frigatebirds are most visible then, offering incredible observations.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning or late afternoon are optimal, as seabirds are most active at dawn and dusk. Midday heat often reduces bird activity, making early starts essential for good sightings.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a respectful distance from nesting sites and avoid loud noises to prevent disturbing the birds. Feeding wildlife is strictly prohibited, and all visitors should follow the sanctuary's guidelines for minimal impact.
🎒
What to bring
Bring binoculars for close-up views of seabirds and a camera with a telephoto lens. Good walking shoes, a hat, and sun protection are recommended due to exposed island conditions.
🧭
Getting there
Access is by boat from the northeastern coast of Trinidad, typically from Speyside or nearby launch points. Boat tours can be arranged locally, and it's advisable to book in advance during peak nesting weeks.
🦌
What to expect
Seabird activity is highly dependent on time of day and weather; patience is needed to spot rare species. Sitting quietly in a good spot often yields the best observations over time.
