Buccoo Marsh on the island of Tobago is an ecologically significant wetland area situated adjacent to the world-renowned Buccoo Reef. The marsh comprises a mosaic of mangrove swamps, brackish lagoons, and grasslands that together serve as a vital buffer zone between the land and the coral reef ecosystem. These mangroves act as a natural filtration system, trapping sediments and nutrients from inland runoff before they can reach and damage the sensitive corals. The area is a haven for birdwatchers, providing a rich habitat for numerous resident and migratory bird species, including egrets, ducks, and various shorebirds. Despite its ecological value, Buccoo Marsh faces threats from coastal development and pollution. However, it remains critical for coastal protection, functioning as a natural sponge during storm surges and high tides.
