Little Tobago
Little Tobago, also known as Bird of Paradise Island, is a 1.8-square-kilometre uninhabited island located off the northeastern coast of Tobago near Speyside. The island rises to a peak of 137 metres above sea level and is covered by dense tropical dry forest and cactus scrub. It gained international fame in 1909 when Sir William Ingram introduced Greater Birds of Paradise from New Guinea to protect them from the plume trade. The population thrived for decades until Hurricane Flora struck in 1963, leading to their eventual extinction on the island. Today, the site serves as a vital sanctuary for indigenous seabirds, including Red-billed Tropicbirds and Magnificent Frigatebirds. The surrounding waters contain significant coral reef systems, making it a key location for ecological research and regulated nature tourism.
