Retezat National Park, established in 1935, is the oldest national park in Romania and a premier natural sanctuary within the Carpathian Mountains. Located in the Retezat Massif of the Southern Carpathians, the park is famous for its sweeping glacial landscape, which features over 80 alpine lakes. Notable among these are Lake Bucura, the largest of its kind in the country, and Lake Zănoaga, the deepest. The park's highest point is Peleaga Peak, reaching an elevation of 2,509 meters. Recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1979, Retezat hosts an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, including many endemic plant species and large predators like bears, wolves, and lynxes. Its rugged peaks and deep glacial valleys offer some of the most spectacular hiking trails in Europe.
