Petroșani is the main city of the Jiu Valley and a significant industrial hub in Hunedoara County, tucked away between the Parâng and Retezat mountains. The city's history and growth were driven by the coal mining industry, which began in the mid-19th century and shaped the local culture for over 150 years. Visitors can explore this heritage at the Mining Museum, one of the oldest and most comprehensive of its kind in Romania. Beyond its industrial roots, Petroșani is a spirited academic center, home to the University of Petroșani, which specializes in mining and engineering. The city serves as a great gateway for outdoor enthusiasts, offering easy access to the Parâng ski resort and the diverse hiking trails of the surrounding South Carpathians. Architectural highlights include the I. G. Duca National Theater and several historic buildings reflecting the interwar period. Today, Petroșani is transitioning from a mono-industrial town to a regional center for mountain tourism and education, providing a unique blend of socialist-era urban planning and impressive natural beauty.
