Corvin Castle (Romania)

Weather…

Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Romania and one of the largest fortresses in Europe. It was constructed in the 15th century by John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara) atop the foundations of an older fortification and was later expanded by his son, King Matthias Corvinus. The castle is distinguished by its imposing towers, massive walls, and a deep dry moat crossed via a long access bridge. Inside, the Knights' Hall and the Diet Hall feature delicate rib vaulting, reflecting the grandeur of medieval noble life. Numerous legends surround the site, most notably the story of the inner courtyard well, which was purportedly dug by Turkish prisoners who were promised their freedom upon reaching water. After surviving several devastating fires and undergoing restoration in the 17th and 19th centuries, the castle now operates as a fascinating museum. Its dramatic and majestic appearance has made it a sought-after filming location for international historical and fantasy cinema. Corvin Castle stands as a symbol of the Hunyadi family's military prowess and a monumental record of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
