Ruins of the Santo Domingo Convent (Panama)

Weather…

The Ruins of the Convent of Santo Domingo are one of the most iconic landmarks in Panama City's Casco Antiguo. Built in the late 17th century, the convent was a center of the Dominican Order's mission on the isthmus. It is most famous for the 'Arco Chato' (Flat Arch), a remarkable architectural feat that stood for over 300 years without internal support. Legend has it that the stability of this arch was used as proof that Panama was not prone to severe earthquakes, which influenced the decision to build the canal here. Although the arch collapsed in 2003 and has since been restored, the ruins remains a powerful symbol of colonial engineering and the city's rich religious history. Today, the site also houses the Museum of Colonial Religious Art.
