Fuerte San José (Panama)

Weather…

Fort San Jose was a critical defensive point located at the tip of the peninsula in Panama Viejo, the original site of Panama City. Its primary role was to protect the city from a sea-borne invasion, covering the shallow waters where enemy ships might attempt a landing. The fort was equipped with several cannons and a small garrison to watch over the Pacific approaches. During Henry Morgan's 1671 attack, the fort was part of the city's desperate but ultimately failed defense. Today, only low stone foundations and parts of the walls remain, offering a glimpse into the defensive perimeter of the first Pacific capital. It is an important stop for understanding the military layout of the old city.
