Cerro Picacho is a distinctive peak in Panama's Coclé province, near the town of El Valle de Antón. The summit provides spectacular views of the surrounding valley, which lies in the crater of a huge extinct volcano. The hike to the top is moderately difficult, but the view compensates for all the effort; on a clear day, you can even see the Pacific coast. The mountain is covered in dense tropical forest, which is home to a rich flora and fauna. Locals tell legends about the mountain, often related to Indian princesses and mythical beings. Picacho is one of the most popular hiking trails in the area, a favorite excursion spot for both locals and tourists due to its proximity to nature and panoramic views.

The trailhead is typically approached via the district of San Carlos, following local paved and unpaved roads to reach the well-known highland communities serving as base camps.

The dry months spanning from January to April provide the safest climbing conditions, significantly reducing the chance of encountering slippery mud on the steep ascents.

Hikers will navigate extremely steep dirt paths, dense forested sections, and rocky outcrops, demanding excellent balance and good physical stamina.

What to bring

Grippy hiking boots, breathable long-sleeved clothing to protect against brush, sufficient hydration, and trekking poles are strongly recommended for the demanding slopes.

Vehicles are normally left at established eco-lodges or private parking areas near the trailhead, where a small fee might be collected by local caretakers.
