Cerro Trinidad is a mountain peak in the central part of Panama, located on the western edge of the Panama Canal watershed. On a clear day, the mountain gives exceptional views of a portion of the canal, including the Culebra Cut and the surrounding lakes. The area is covered by a dense tropical rainforest, which plays an important role in regulating the regional climate and protecting the watershed. Although it is not among the best-known hiking destinations, Cerro Trinidad and its surroundings attract adventurous hikers and researchers studying the rich biodiversity. The life of the communities at the foot of the mountain is closely intertwined with the forest. The geological structure of the area is part of the Central American volcanic arc, contributing to the diversity of the landscape.

Getting there

Typically accessed from the Capira district, the route to the base usually involves navigating secondary, sometimes unpaved roads. The hike generally starts from the village of El Líbano or nearby rural settlements.

Climbing is strongly recommended during the dry season, which generally runs from January to April. During the wet season, the trails turn into muddy slides, significantly increasing the difficulty and danger of the steep sections.

The climb is renowned for its steepness, featuring sections that require scrambling on all fours and navigating near vertical drops. The path cuts through a humid tropical forest environment, which can make the terrain slippery even on dry days.

What to bring

Footwear with exceptional grip is mandatory, and many hikers find lightweight gloves useful for holding onto roots and rocks. Bring a substantial amount of water, as the exertion in the heat will cause rapid dehydration.
