Miraflores Locks (Panama)

Weather…

Miraflores Locks are the most accessible and visited part of the Panama Canal, located just a short drive from Panama City. These locks are the final step for ships transiting from the Atlantic to the Pacific, lowering them in two stages to the level of the Pacific Ocean. The Miraflores Visitor Center provides a front-row view of the massive container ships and cruise liners as they pass through the narrow concrete chambers, separated from the observers by just a few meters. The locks are a marvel of 20th-century engineering, still using much of the original machinery from 1914. They demonstrate the complex system of gravity-fed water that makes the canal operation possible. A visit to Miraflores is essential for understanding the scale and impact of the canal on global maritime trade.
