Mateare is an ancient indigenous settlement and current municipality located just west of Managua, hugging the southern shoreline of Lake Managua (Lake Xolotlán). Geographically, it is dominated by the Apoyeque peninsula and its memorable, water-filled volcanic caldera. Historically, it was a significant Chorotega indigenous center before the Spanish conquest. Today, Mateare functions largely as an industrial and residential suburb of the capital, hosting numerous factories and free-trade zones along the new highway. Despite its industrial growth, it maintains a strong fishing culture on the lake and faces severe challenges regarding deforestation and water pollution in the lake basin.
