The city is situated in a hilly coastal landscape that extends to the Pacific Ocean and includes well-known seaside resorts such as Masachapa and Pochomil. Historically, San Rafael del Sur is closely linked to limestone and cement production; the local cement factory is one of the largest and most important in the country, covering much of the national demand.
